Atchison Village includes 450 units of five styles, in 97 one-story buildings and 65 two-story buildings. Every unit has ground-level entries in front and back and A fenceable backyard. Most units have an assigned parking space, and there is ample on-street parking near each unit on the public streets.
Because purchase of a unit is actually purchase of a membership in Atchison Village Mutual Homes Corporation, not a piece of real property, it is difficult to obtain a loan for purchase; the membership certificate cannot be liened. However, the Atchison Village Credit Union may lend a portion of the purchase cost if the buyer has a co-signer with real property in California.
A maintenance fee, currently averaging ~$400 - $600 monthly, covers taxes, insurance, reserve funding, structural maintenance, water, and waste collection. The property taxes are a major portion of this fee, and explain the wide variation.
The grounds are landscaped, including a large public park and separate soccer and baseball fields with bleachers. There is also a children's playground with modern Big Toys and soft ground. All streets have sidewalks and street lighting and are patrolled by the Richmond Police Department. There is a large laundromat and small supermarket adjacent, at First Ave and MacDonald.
The Village is convenient to major freeways (I-580 and I-80) and about a mile from the Richmond Bart station.
